Transforming Architectural Columns into Living Design Elements

As part of the recent lobby renovation at the Hilton Garden Inn Atlanta Airport, New Growth Designs collaborated with the design team to create four custom fabricated Emberleaf® greenery installations that transformed ordinary structural columns into striking architectural features.

The project called for a greenery solution that would add warmth, texture, and a biophilic element to the newly renovated lobby while meeting the practical requirements of a busy hospitality environment. Rather than concealing the columns or treating them as purely structural elements, the design embraced them as focal points within the space.

The Design Challenge

Large structural columns are often necessary within commercial spaces, but they can interrupt sightlines and create visual heaviness within an otherwise open environment.

The design team sought a way to soften these architectural elements and introduce natural texture throughout the lobby without creating additional maintenance requirements.

The Solution

New Growth Designs designed and fabricated custom Emberleaf® greenery panels specifically engineered to wrap the four lobby columns. Each panel was built to the exact dimensions of the installation and assembled in our North Carolina workshop using inherently fire-retardant foliage.

The custom fabrication process allowed the greenery to follow the shape of each column, creating the appearance of lush, living plant material integrated directly into the architecture.

By covering the columns with rich layers of realistic foliage, the installations soften the space, add visual interest from every angle, and create a more inviting atmosphere for guests entering and gathering in the lobby.
